Whether you’re moving to a new home or simply need to store your surplus of belongings to a storage unit, it’s best to know how to pack and prepare properly. This will keep your items from damage while being moved or stored for a long period.
To help you out, here are some packing tips and tricks you might want to keep in mind:
1. Plan ahead
STOR MATE and a few storage experts noted that many storage solutions are available today for items needs storing on a short-term basis or for an indefinite time. The key is to take an inventory of all the items you need to store.
It’s up to you if you want to use a notepad or an app, but the important thing is to have everything well-organised. Which items are you planning to store for a longer time? Which ones need easy access?
2. Fill boxes completely
If you’re stacking the boxes, be sure they’re filled completely to avoid denting or crushing the top or side of the box. When you pack loose items, such as glassware, toys, or any odd-shaped stuff, put crumpled paper or bubble wrap in the open spaces.
3. Choose the right type of boxes
Boxes for storage purposes are available in various shapes and sizes, so be sure to use the right ones for each item you’re packing. For example, if you’re putting away your stacks of books, place them in a heavy-duty box that’s less likely to crumble or break. Be careful not to overfill the box, though.
4. Label boxes clearly
Use a marker to label the boxes. Write clearly and on more than one side. If you have boxes full of glassware and other breakables, remember to mark them as ‘fragile’ and put which side it’s best to carry.
Take the time to plan and organise everything. Apart from making it easier for you to find things in the future, it will also make it less likely for anything to get damaged during the move or while they’re in storage.
